I’ve always enjoyed watching monthly or yearly “favourites” videos on Youtube. They’ve lead me to some awesome recommendations for books, movies, make-up, people, household items and more.

I don’t have a youtube channel, but I do have this blog. And I want to continue to use it to express the inner most workings of my mind or the deepest depths of my soul. But like, also some cool skincare items.

So without further delay, here are some of my favourites from the past month!

TV Shows

Unorthodox (Netflix)

If you haven’t watched Unorthodox on Netflix yet, I implore you to grab some popcorn, get in a comfortable position and watch it asap. And buckle up. It’s not necessarily an easy watch, but it’s absolutely riveting and compelling, eclipsed with themes of freedom, rebellion, community, tradition and individuality. The story takes you on a journey of a young woman who flees her Hasidic Jewish community in New York City, and the events that unfold afterwards. It’s a 4 episode mini-series, but watches like a long film. I found the acting in this show captivating, truthful and emotionally charged; truly a work of art. Seriously, I started to watch the first episode with my sisters one evening and then we quickly agreed we couldn’t wait another day to finish the rest – it’s that good.

The Morning Show (Apple TV)

I flew through the 10 episodes of this whirlwind drama about journalism behind the curtains of a morning talk show. Starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell, you are really on a ride in every episode. The main plot involves Carell’s character being accused of sexual assault and misconduct and the lasting effects on other characters. But I especially appreciated how this show examined the responsibility of workplaces as a whole.

Good Girls (Netflix)

With intense shows like Unorthodox and The Morning Show, I wanted to add some more comedy to my April TV roster and this show is absolutely hilarious. While the storyline keeps you on your toes with all the twists and turns, I find myself still rooting for the 3 main characters. The chemistry between the cast is palpable and the writing is superb; they somehow make it dramatic and interesting without making you confused.

Books

Where the Crawdads Sing
By: Delia Owens

I feel like I kept seeing this book pop up everywhere, and so I finally went in for it, in need of a good story after so many consecutive non-fiction reads. While the beginning was a bit slow for me, I quickly got into the author’s rhythmic imagery of the environment and characters. It’s really a beautiful coming of age story, but unique in it’s heavy themes of loneliness, trauma, abandonment and nature. Also, there’s an interesting murder mystery wrapped up throughout the book. You won’t be able to put this one down!

Skincare

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream

The last time I was in Sephora, I got a great deal on a sample size of three products from Origins, this eye cream included. I’ve wanted to try this eye cream for a while because it comes highly recommended. Well, it hasn’t disappointed me! One of the main ingredients is caffeine, but it’s just enough to give tired eyes a little extra “oomph” in the morning. The texture is lovely and glides on smooth. And it naturally brightens and moisturizes my under eye area.

The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil

I love a good moisturizing, natural face oil! But I’ll admit, I may be a bit late to “The Ordinary” train. Nevertheless- I’m a convert, thanks to my sis! I put a couple drops of this on my face in the evening and it soaks into my skin effortlessly. Then I wake up with my face looking and feeling rejuvenated. Rose hip seed oil is well known for its benefits in treating signs of aging, treating damaged skin and providing tons of nutrients like Vitamins A and C. Maybe it’s time to add this product to your nightly skincare routine.

Mask of Magnaminty (Lush)

This is a classic favourite mask for me; one that I revisited once a week during the month of April. It’s the perfect blend of deep cleansing and exfoliation for my skin. Packed with peppermint oil, kaolin clay and ground aduki beans-this mask will do wonders for your skin.

Music

5 Seconds of Summer (CALM)

Now…I hope you haven’t been sleeping on 5sos’s talent. But if you have, you MUST listen to their latest album CALM. While they may have a stereotypical boy band appeal, their music is interesting, dynamic, fearless and fun. I’ve become a fan in recent years and appreciate how much they blend music styles and genres. No song feels the same, yet there is a consistency in quality production and thoughtful lyrics that make their sound unified. Also…they play their own instruments which is an added bonus. My standout favourites from this album include Red Desert, Wildflower and High.

City and Colour (A Pill For Loneliness)

City and Colour, also known as Dallas Green, has done it again with his lyrical storytelling in this album. Even though this album came out last year, I only learnt about it recently. But I’m not surprised that this collection of songs struck a chord with me like the rest of his music catalogue. His music has been a massive source of comfort in some of my loneliest moments and this time around was no exception. Standout song favourites include Astronaut, Me and the Moonlight, and Strangers.

Finneas (Blood Harmony)

Let’s just say I’m guilty of sleeping on some good tunes. I’ve started listening to Finneas more lately and I’m obsessed with his bright, soulful music. Standout song favourites from this album include I Lost a Friend and Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.

Podcasts

The Viall Files

One of the former Bachelors, Nick Viall, hosts a podcast I’ve come to look forward listening to over the past several months. He hosts weekly episodes titled “Ask Nick”, taking inquiries from callers and listeners related to all kinds of relationships. I’ve particular enjoyed these segments and the insightful answers Nick provides. I feel he does a good job at being fairly realistic and upfront, while also maintaining respect and compassion. Don’t knock it til you try it!

Beautiful Anonymous

I’ve been off and on listening to this podcast for the past 3 years and I found myself going back to it a lot in April. It’s really cathartic to listen to because vulnerability is a consistent thread in every episode. Chris Gethard’s compassionate hosting touch is just the icing on the cake. I just love the real, unique stories and perspectives brought to life in this podcast and I definitely recommend a listen.

People

Yoga with Kassandra

Pre-COVID, I was practicing yoga in different studios around the world or just finding time to do simple stretches on my own. Since being in quarantine, I’ve been looking for yoga instructors on Youtube that have classes I jive with. I’ve been loving Yoga with Kassandra. Not only does she live in Ottawa (shout out to my university city!), but she leads a variety of classes that are easy to flow along with. I’m also a HUGE fan of yin yoga and she has several yin classes on her channel.
